attribute NC_GLOBAL summary String The purpose of this glider mission is to perform along canyon transects of Palmer Deep within the operating CODAR fields off of Anvers Island. The glider was deployed offshore of Palmer Station and performed station keeping near the mouth of Palmer Canyon. This multi-platform field study will investigate the impact of coastal physical processes (e.g. tides, currents, upwelling events, sea-ice) on Adelie penguin foraging ecology in the vicinity of Palmer Deep, off Anvers Island on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Guided by real-time surface convergence and divergences based on remotely sensed surface current maps derived from a coastal network of High Frequency Radars (HFRs), a multidisciplinary research team will adaptively sample the distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton, which influence Adelie penguin foraging ecology, to understand how local oceanographic processes structure the ecosystem. The deployment lasted 17 days. This delayed-mode data set contains temperature, salinity, density, chlorophyll, CDOM, and beta700nm measurements. The glider was equipped with a WETLabs ECO VSF meter and AAnderaa oxygen optode, but these instruments were turned off for the duration of the deployment.

attribute platform description String A long-range autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based on buoyancy. It is used for remote water column sampling. It uses hydraulic buoyancy change to alter the vehicle density in relation to the surrounding water thereby causing the vehicle to either float or sink. Given an appropriate dive or climb angle, the wings and body lift and convert some of this vertical motion into a forward saw tooth horizontal motion.
