This project supports the deployment and realtime data delivery of autonomous underwater gliders in the coastal ocean to better resolve and understand essential ocean features and processes that contribute to hurricane intensification or weakening prior to making landfall. Glider Comet is being deployed within the highly stratified Mid Atlantic Bight during the 2021 hurricane season with the goal of sampling ocean mixing during summer tropical cyclones or fall transition storms using an integrated Rockland Scientific, Inc Microstructure Profiler. Real-time data will support ongoing NOAA/NWS operational ocean modeling during hurricanes, while post-storm analysis will improve our understanding of ocean mixing processes.
