This glider is equipped with an Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler (AZFP), an autonomous, low-power echo sounder that possesses the capabilities to study the abundance, distribution, and behavior of various sizes of fishes and large zooplankton throughout the water column over large spatial scales by measuring acoustic backscatter returns with ultrasonic frequencies. This 3-4 week deployment will test the use of gliders for conducting fisheries and ecosystem surveys in and around the Ocean Wind study site. The glider used for the automated observation includes an integrated deep rated version of the Ion Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (ISFET)-based pH sensor. The pH sensor unit is complemented with existing glider sensors including a CTD, a WETLabs FLBBCD ECO puck configured for simultaneous chlorophyll fluorescence and optical backscatter measurements, and an Aanderaa Optode for measuring dissolved oxygen. This approximately 21 to 30 day deployment out of Sandy Hook, NJ will run cross-shelf transects zig-zagging southward and ultimately coming back inshore along E line for a planned recovery out of Tuckerton, NJ as the battery pack allows. This glider track will cover Atlantic sea scallop and Atlantic surfclam habitats in the MAB. The real-time dataset contains CTD, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, CDOM and optical backscatter measurements. Dissolved oxygen and pH data will be processed post-deployment. This is the second glider deployment in 2022 for this project. However, coincident measures of phytoplankton, prey fields, and predator locations in their advective context have not been made to establish the ecological importance of horizontal flow.  In this project, we will simultaneously sample across the entire food web from the phytoplankton and prey fields to the top predators to understand the ocean features that support life in these polar systems.  For the first time in this region, we will integrate these glider deployed sensors with moored, remote sensed and small boat platforms to simultaneously map phytoplankton blooms, krill aggregations, and top predator foraging relative to dynamic ocean features.
